27 June 2013 - 12:00am

Top art collectors at the Kuala Lumpur preview of The Edge Auction’s inaugural sale on June 29 have earmarked what have caught their fancy.

Besides the VIP guests and collectors at the June 20 preview held at the newly-opened art space known as The Edge Galerie in Mont’Kiara Meridin, there has been a steady stream of visitors including many new collectors.

The preview which ends on June 27 is open from 11am till 7pm.

Among the favourites are Chang Fee Ming’s Trail of Zheng He – Semarang, which caught the eye of some of Kuala Lumpur’s leading art collectors.

However, the top collectors were tight-lipped as to how much they were willing to bid for the prized works. The 33 works have an auction price range of between RM20,500 for Samsudin Wahab’s thought-provoking “See For Nothing” to RM450,000 for Abdul Latiff Mohidin’s “Gelora Air 3”.

Hosted by The Edge Media Group chairman Datuk Tong Kooi Ong and Group CEO Ho Kay Tat, the VIP event attracted art collectors like Ken Holdings chairman and managing director Kenny Tan and his executive director and son, Sam Tan.

Other corporate guests included Maybank deputy president & community financial services head Datuk Lim Hong Tat, Wawasan TKH Holdings executive director and CEO Datuk Tan Boon Pun, Group M CEO and Mindshare Malaysia leader Girish Menon, Knight Frank Malaysia managing director Sarkunan Subramaniam, Mah Sing Group’s Lionel Leong and Sime Darby Property sales and marketing head Kit James.

Also at the event were Kumpulan Lebar Daun group executive chairman Datuk Noor Azman, British India founder directors S.H. Yong and Pat Liew and Stylo International founder and CEO Datuk Nancy Yeoh.

The 100-over art enthusiasts at the preview included Zain Azahari bin Zainal Abidin, Datuk Dr Kenneth Chin, Datuk Koay Soon Eng, Billy Too and wife Yoong Sin Min, Pakhruddin Sulaiman, John Lee, Dr Krishna Rampal, T.K. Quek as well as Datin Marina Mahathir, Nik Fahmee and Valentine Willie.

The guests included distinguished artists such as Jolly Koh, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Chong Siew Ying and Kow Leong Kiang.

Among the other highlights of the auction are works by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Bayu Utomo Radjikin and Jolly Koh. Drawing equal attention at the preview were works by late artists, namely, Datuk Hoessein Enas, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng, Kok Yew Puah and Chinese ink master Chen Wen Hsi.

On the weekend of June 14, the auction collection made its debut preview in Singapore at the Helutrans art space located at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Among the art lovers who attended the three-day preview included Agnes Ma, Harris Kor and his wife Tin Leng,  Henri Chen, Reis Lee, Edwin Lee, Shirley Low and Yeap Lam Yang.

Singaporean collectors were more keen on works of late masters such as Chen Wen Hsi, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk Hoessein Enas, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng, Tan Choon Ghee and Penang pioneer artist Lee Cheng Yong.

While most preview visitors to the KL and Singapore showings were already knowledgeable about Malaysian artists and their art, there are also newer collectors looking to invest in artworks that have been vetted and appraised.
