EDUCATION
- Was apprenticed to his father, who was a commercial artist and teacher
- Studied in the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the University of Michigan, and later proceeded to obtain his Ph.D in Fine Arts from New York University
- Dr Chew Teng Beng’s painting won the First Prize at the BAA 1st Juried Exhibition of Michigan Painting in 1968
- He also was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Art by De Montford University in 1995
- Upon his return to Malaysia in 1972, he established the Fine Arts programme for USM, Penang. There, he became associate professor of the Art Centre
- He was also awarded R&D grants from the Malaysian Government to research indigenous plants for the manufacture of pulp and paper from 1989 to 1991
