- Considered as one of the finest impressionists in the country
- Taught by a teacher at the age of 13 in China who studied impressionism in Japan
- His family migrated to Singapore in 1933 where he forged a friendship with Professor Zhong Bai-Mu (Chong Pai Mu), a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts
- Worked as a salesman, shop assistant and typesetter for a chinese newspaper when he moved to Kuala Lumpur in 1934, before retiring in 1977
